OpenAI's AI Ethics Chief Leaves After Less Than a Year
According to the Financial Times, Chloé Bakalar, OpenAI's head of AI ethics, left the company at the end of July, less than a year after joining in August 2025. An OpenAI spokesperson said ethical considerations are integrated into model building across multiple research teams.
Bakalar previously taught at Princeton and other institutions, and spent six years at Meta leading AI ethics initiatives applied to Instagram and Facebook. At OpenAI, she focused on ethical approaches to model development, human-AI interaction, and machine consciousness debates, and was the company's only dedicated ethicist.
