At its 2026 Developer Day event in San Francisco, USA, OpenAI publicly demoed its always-on AI assistant Dots for the first time, but the system suddenly stopped responding, creating an awkward moment on stage. Holly Li, product lead for the ChatGPT team, asked an agent named Dottie to prepare launch work for a fictional music app, but the agent stayed silent and the demo had to be paused. The host joked, "I guess Dot is a bit slow this morning."

According to OpenAI, Dots is a personal AI agent that runs continuously, built on the GPT-6 Astra model with its own cloud computer and browser. It can keep doing research, writing, and coding tasks even after the user leaves their computer.

The interruption happened during its first public appearance, and the cause has not been announced. The agent's always-on capability and real-world reliability still need further testing.
