OpenAI's first AI hardware: hockey-puck sized, coming in 2027
Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reports that OpenAI is developing its first self-branded AI hardware, a hockey-puck-sized device about 115.8 cubic centimeters, priced between $300 and $400, and expected to launch in 2027. Designed with former Apple designer Jony Ive, it's positioned as a screenless smart speaker for home use, portable with one hand.
The device includes movable parts, lights, cameras, and sensors to indicate status and interaction. It works like the ChatGPT voice mode on phones but uses more advanced models for more natural conversations. This move marks OpenAI's expansion from software into hardware.
