OpenAI's new AI chip beats Nvidia in speed test
OpenAI revealed details about its new AI chip, Jalapeño, at the Hot Chips conference. In tests, it beat top processors like Nvidia's GB200 and GB300 in speed and efficiency. The chip uses less power to handle more AI tasks and responds faster. OpenAI worked with Broadcom to make it, and it's built for AI reasoning—running trained models to do jobs or power AI agents. Compared to Nvidia systems, Jalapeño does 1.5 to 1.9 times more work per watt and has much lower delay. OpenAI plans to start using it on a small scale by the end of this year, then expand by 2027.
