OpenAI's top model outspends Anthropic in enterprise, AI spending growth draws attention
According to the latest AI Index from fintech company Ramp, in July 2025, US companies spent about 75% of what they spent on Anthropic's Fable 5 model on OpenAI's GPT-5.6 Sol, showing OpenAI's lead in top-model revenue. Although Anthropic still leads in enterprise adoption, weak demand for high-end models may signal companies are tightening AI budgets.
Ramp, tracking bills from over 70,000 US businesses, found that 43.5% of companies paid for Anthropic products in July, versus 39.7% for OpenAI, with xAI rising to 4% and Google dropping to 6.2%. Economist Ara Kharazian noted that some companies use AI through Google Workspace, so Google's numbers might be underestimated.
For the top 1% of AI spenders, median AI spending per employee jumped from under $5,000 in June to $7,400 in July, while the overall median rose from $11 to $12. Kharazian said coding agents are a key driver of spending growth, as their scalability leads to snowballing costs.
