OpenAI says ChatGPT hits 1.2 billion weekly users, 2.5 million businesses

At its 2026 Developer Day event, OpenAI announced that ChatGPT now has over 1.2 billion weekly active users, up from 1 billion in July. ChatGPT Work and Codex together have more than 35 million weekly users, and 2.5 million businesses now use OpenAI products.

OpenAI says this shows generative AI is moving quickly from personal use into the workplace. Companies and developers increasingly need tools for document handling, data analysis, software development, and workflow automation.

OpenAI is also pushing further into the enterprise market with "Dots," an AI agent that can work across apps. It combines Codex and ChatGPT Work to handle research, data analysis, document creation, and software development.

OpenAI believes that growing business adoption will help shift AI from a "chat tool" to a "work partner."
