OpenAI Shuts Down Video Generation App Sora: Daily Losses of $1M and Computing Power Burden as Main Reasons
OpenAI's generative AI video app Sora once gained attention for its creative features, allowing users to insert themselves into scenes like dribbling with Harlem Globetrotters or dueling Darth Vader with lightsabers. However, the company recently decided to shut down Sora suddenly, catching partner Disney off guard.
The main reasons are Sora's daily losses of about $1 million and heavy consumption of AI chip computing power. During IPO preparation, OpenAI needs to free up resources for new models and enterprise products, shifting focus to productivity tools.
Disney originally planned to invest $1 billion and collaborate, but the deal fell through. OpenAI stated it will focus on long-term economic value areas, and the Sora team will shift to long-term layouts like robotics.
