OpenAI upgrades ChatGPT Chrome extension with sidebar assistant

OpenAI has upgraded its ChatGPT extension for Google Chrome, adding a sidebar feature. Users can now use ChatGPT directly in the sidebar for market research, comparing sources, extracting info from websites, and working with Google Workspace and Microsoft 365 files. The extension can see everything in your browser, including highlighted text and local files.

OpenAI says these features are based on feedback from Atlas browser users, helping people be more productive in their browser. They'll phase out the standalone Atlas browser and guide users to the ChatGPT extension.

OpenAI's James Sun says the extension brings all of ChatGPT and Codex's power to the browser, and syncs conversation threads across devices. Users can switch between desktop app and browser seamlessly.
