OpenAI upgrades ChatGPT memory with Dreaming V3 system
OpenAI has upgraded ChatGPT's memory feature with a new system based on Dreaming V3, focusing on improving outdated memories, accuracy, and handling large-scale users. The memory feature first launched in April 2024, relying on users to explicitly ask ChatGPT to remember something. In 2025, Dreaming was introduced to automatically scan chat history and improve personalization.
This upgrade makes Dreaming a core system, using three standards: keeping useful context, following user preferences, and updating automatically. Data shows Dreaming V3 performs much better than earlier versions. The new system automatically picks up important details and shows them as summaries, so users can check and edit what ChatGPT knows about them.
US Plus and Pro users can try the new memory system now, with double the storage capacity. OpenAI says recent improvements have cut the computing power needed for Dreaming to serve free users to one-fifth, so it will be rolled out to free users soon.
