OpenClaw to Move to Independent Foundation Operation; Nvidia and ByteDance Have Joined
OpenClaw will move to a soon-to-be-established independent foundation for continued open-source operation. Founder and Austrian developer Peter Steinberger, in his first Bloomberg interview after joining OpenAI, revealed that Nvidia and ByteDance have confirmed their membership in the foundation, Tencent is in talks, and there have been communications with Microsoft. He said he is trying to be 'Swiss' in this matter.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman previously called Steinberger a 'genius' and stated that 'the future will be extremely multi-Agent, and supporting open source is important to us.' Steinberger joined OpenAI's Codex team and shared the integration direction of Codex and OpenClaw: when Agents are smart enough, they will write code independently to enhance their capabilities, blurring the line between 'programming' and 'non-programming'—this is why the two are merged.
He also talked about the differences between the US and China in AI Agent applications: some US companies prohibit employees from using OpenClaw, while some Chinese companies require it. Chinese firms track employees' daily automation achievements to push for 10x efficiency; US firms restrict use due to security concerns. He thinks both are imperfect, but the US can learn from China's faster adoption of new technologies.
