Over 70% of Americans oppose AI data centers, with over 500 local bans across the US
More than 70% of Americans are against building AI data centers near their communities. A report from The Information shows that over 500 local bans on new data centers have been issued across the US, up from around 300 in June this year. These bans are mostly in southern states like Georgia and Florida. New York's governor has paused approval for data centers that use over 50 megawatts of power. Massachusetts and Nebraska have stopped offering tax breaks to developers. Residents complain about noise, higher water and electricity bills, and harm to the environment. Since 2026, at least 37 people have been arrested while protesting against data center projects.
