Patreon CEO Conte: Ignoring Creators' Interests Could Push Creative Industry Into Disaster
Independent creators often face the dilemma of their works being used by AI models without compensation, a problem drawing industry attention. Patreon CEO Jack Conte recently noted that large tech companies' AI models almost bypass individual creators during training, ignoring their interests.
Currently, companies like OpenAI and Meta have content licensing agreements with traditional media, but independent creators lack similar channels. Conte believes tech giants have no motivation to pay individual creators and calls for regulation to protect creators with weak bargaining power.
Conte is not against AI; instead, he thinks AI can aid creation but needs a reasonable mechanism. He mentioned YouTube's Content ID system as a reference, allowing creators to remove works or get paid and credited, and is optimistic about a fair reward mechanism in the future.
