Photoshop Filters Are Becoming Editable Layers
Adobe is redesigning how filters work in Photoshop. Right now, filters are applied directly to a layer's pixels. If users want to change the strength or range later, they often have to undo steps, go back through history, or add masks.
The new system turns filters into separate effect layers that can be moved, adjusted, and removed at any time. Users can drag a filter onto a specific layer, for example blurring only the background while keeping the subject sharp. Filter settings move from pop-up windows to the Properties panel, with changes shown live on the canvas.
If a filter doesn't look right, users can edit, hide, delete, or swap it without ruining the original photo. This makes effects like local blur, film light leaks, and lens flares easier to create. Photoshop AI Assistant can also build custom filters with adjustable sliders. The update is expected to roll out later this year.
