Puter Labs runs full Firefox inside Chrome
Puter Labs has launched an experimental project called Firefox in WebAssembly, letting users run a full Firefox browser inside Chrome. The project compiles Firefox's Gecko engine into WebAssembly (Wasm), a low-level binary code format that runs in modern browsers and supports high-performance apps built with languages like C++. To boost speed, the team also compiled the JavaScript engine SpiderMonkey into Wasm, added an experimental JIT compiler, and enabled GPU acceleration via WebGL. Users just click "Launch Firefox" to start the browser. The development used AI models like Claude Opus, costing over $25,000 and about 30 billion tokens. Some websites may show garbled Chinese text, but the project proves it's possible to compile a full browser engine into Wasm for cross-platform use.
