Putin Pushes Russia to Accelerate Generative AI Development, Plans 38 New Nuclear Plants for Computing Power
Recently, Russian President Putin stated at the '2025 AI World Tour' international conference that Russia should master a full set of independent products and technologies in generative AI, which is related to national sovereignty. To ensure computing power for AI, Russia plans to build 38 new nuclear plants in regions like the Far East over the next 20 years and will collaborate with the Eurasian Economic Union, SCO, etc.
Affected by Western sanctions, Russia struggles to obtain advanced inference chips and relies on China's support: China provides Loongson chips adapted to some Russian systems, helps train Russian AI talents, and cooperates in generative AI and standard-setting.
Analysis shows Russia did not fully invest in AI earlier due to risk awareness, only following after China and the US (e.g., China's DeepSeek) achieved results, and currently lags behind both in global AI large models.
