Record 8 Pulitzer entries used AI in 2026
Nieman Lab reported on Aug 3 that a record 8 entries in the 2026 Pulitzer Prizes disclosed using AI, including 5 winners and 3 finalists. The Pulitzers are top US honors in journalism, literature, and music, announced on May 4 at Columbia University.
Pulitzer administrator Marjorie Miller said newsrooms are less worried about AI tools, with more using them for research and data analysis, but entries shouldn't rely on AI for writing or editing. The Wall Street Journal used crawlers to grab county meeting records after Texas floods, then applied large language models and NLP to find past flood data. The Star Tribune used ChatGPT to translate a shooter's diary, checked by language experts. The New York Times downloaded over 10,000 documents for its SEC crypto probe, using GPT-5 to double-check human classification.
