Reflection and other Western firms to launch open-weight AI models
The competition in AI models is set to heat up. According to Axios, Reflection and several other Western companies are about to launch open-weight AI models. Open-weight models can run on customers' own systems, a key advantage for industries with strict data security needs for fine-tuning and inference. The report says Reflection's new model will likely trail the most advanced closed-source models from US rivals at first, but can compete with top open-weight models from China. To get ready, Reflection has been talking with people in Washington and locking in the computing power it needs to expand its services. The company previously signed a compute deal with SpaceX worth up to 6.3 billion US dollars. A Reflection spokesperson declined to comment. The wave of open-weight releases may give data-sensitive industries more options for local deployment.
