SoftBank Completes $30 Billion Investment in OpenAI, Taking About 13% Stake

SoftBank Group has completed its third investment in OpenAI through the Vision Fund 2, worth $10 billion. With this, SoftBank's previously promised $30 billion investment has been fully delivered, and it is expected to hold about 13% of OpenAI.

OpenAI's valuation is rising fast. Bloomberg reports that the AI lab is seeking a new funding round of at least $30 billion.

The money comes from SoftBank bonds. Reuters says this is the largest corporate high-yield bond offering ever globally. For SoftBank, the funds are both an opportunity and a risk: they give the company plenty of capital to keep pushing its AI strategy, but also make it more dependent on credit market conditions and a single capital-intensive industry.
