Sony Music sues Udio for using 30,000 songs without permission to train AI
Sony Music has filed a new lawsuit in a US federal court against AI music startup Udio, accusing it of copying over 30,000 recordings without permission to train its AI model. This follows an earlier 2024 lawsuit that involved just 333 recordings. Sony says the 30,000 songs are just a small part of hundreds of thousands of infringing recordings identified.
Udio had previously settled with Universal Music and Warner Music, but Sony is pushing ahead. Udio argues its use is "fair use," but Sony says if there's a market for paid licenses, you can't claim the market doesn't exist. Sony also calls Udio's actions an "illegal race" that tramples on music copyrights.
