Spanish Startup Openchip Plans to Launch AI Accelerator Products by 2028
Openchip, a spin-off from Barcelona Supercomputing Center in Spain, recently stated that its AI chip is expected to tape out between 2026 and 2027, with commercial shipment as early as 2028. The company aims to develop a full-stack European computing solution.
Openchip's vector accelerator is designed for specialized inference needs in the agent era. It uses Chiplet technology and RISC-V instruction set, supporting CPU-less operation; it can save 30% power at the same computing power. Currently, the company has collaborated with imec (process technology), French Fabless firm Kalray (next-gen DPU IP), and NEC (HPC system deployment).
