Study Finds: People Still Perceive AI as More Confident Than Humans Even With Same Answers
More and more people around the world use AI systems daily, but these answers are not always accurate or reliable. A study by the University of Waterloo and University College London found that even when AI and humans give the same answers, people generally perceive AI as more confident.
The study notes that people often rely on AI for advice, but since AI does not actively indicate its confidence in answers, users tend to subjectively judge AI as more confident based on inherent biases (such as thinking AI is more capable), leading to overtrust. Researchers emphasize that AI products need to clearly communicate their confidence in answers to prevent users from over-relying due to misunderstanding.
