Swedish University Develops AI Model to Identify Multiple Neurodegenerative Diseases via Single Blood Test
Lund University in Sweden recently announced the development of a new AI model that can assist in identifying multiple neurodegenerative diseases through a single blood test, offering new insights for early screening and auxiliary diagnosis of related diseases.
Different neurodegenerative diseases have similar early symptoms, and overlapping pathological processes in patients' brains increase clinical diagnostic difficulty. The model was developed based on protein data from over 17,000 patients and healthy controls, and can identify 5 diseases or conditions—including Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, ALS, frontotemporal dementia, and stroke history—by learning blood protein features.
Research shows that the model's ability to predict cognitive decline may be better than existing clinical diagnostic methods, and it also provides potential research directions for disease mechanisms. The team hopes to develop more reliable blood testing methods in the future, reducing reliance on other clinical tools. Related results have been published in the British journal Nature Medicine.
