TCS boss says AI agents will match employee count, but no mass layoffs planned
The chairman of Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), N Chandrasekaran, said at the annual shareholder meeting that soon the number of AI agents will match the number of employees. He said TCS won't lay off people but will slow down hiring. Last July, the company cut over 12,000 jobs. Chandrasekaran noted that AI agents will reduce hiring in the IT industry, as some human tasks are now automated. But he believes new jobs will appear as companies adapt to AI-driven work. India's $315 billion IT industry worries about AI disrupting labor-intensive business models. Chandrasekaran said AI agents and employees will work together, calling it a necessary transformation for the company, industry, and country.
