Tesla uses two suppliers for AI chips, Samsung and TSMC get orders
Tesla is using two suppliers for the AI chips that power its future electric cars and humanoid robots. The AI6 chip uses Samsung's 2nm process, while the AI6.5 uses TSMC's 2nm. The Samsung-made AI5 chip has already been taped out, based on 2nm technology. The TSMC version of AI5 uses a 3nm process, with design partner GUC, and its tape-out is a quarter ahead. The two AI5 versions differ in design: Samsung's 2nm uses GAA transistors, while TSMC's 3nm uses FinFET, meaning Samsung's version will cost more to make.
