Thailand Sets Up Data Center Policy Committee
The Thai government announced on August 14 the creation of a "Data Center Operation Policy Committee" to set clear rules for data centers, focusing on their impact on electricity, water, and the environment. This aims to balance industry growth with national interests.
The announcement notes that data centers use a lot of electricity, and with rising demand and limited power supply, their expansion could affect electricity prices, people's access to power, and national energy security. Also, the cooling process uses significant water and generates heat, which, if not managed well, could increase fire risks and impact water for homes, farming, and the environment.
To address these challenges, the Thai government stressed the need for a policy that encourages investment while ensuring strict oversight, following fair principles to allocate electricity and water efficiently, protect data sovereignty, and help achieve the country's carbon neutrality goals.
