Top AI models now keep lead for only 7 weeks

The latest data from the Epoch Capabilities Index (ECI) shows that top AI models now keep their lead for only about 7 weeks on average. ECI is a benchmark that tracks how well different language models perform over time.

Epoch AI researcher Jaeho Lee noted that OpenAI's GPT-4 stayed on top for about a year, while the o1 model held the lead for over three months—but newer models haven't matched that. Since Claude 3 Opus took over from GPT-4 in February 2024, the top spot has changed hands 17 times.

This trend shows AI competition is heating up, with tech evolving faster than ever. For businesses and developers, keeping up with the latest models is now key to staying competitive.
