Two US media outlets sue OpenAI and Microsoft over copyright
Two US newspapers, The Seattle Times and Newsday, have filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and Microsoft. They claim the companies used their articles without permission to train AI models. The case was filed in a federal court in New York. The articles include content behind paywalls.
The lawsuit says OpenAI and Microsoft took content from the media websites to train AI like ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, and Bing AI. These AI tools can copy or rephrase the articles, which reduces the need for readers to visit the sites or pay for subscriptions.
OpenAI said its models are trained on public data and follow fair use rules, but did not comment on the specific claims. Microsoft said it was surprised by the lawsuit, but values local news and is open to talks. The media companies want the court to order the destruction of copied content and related AI models.
