UK Brothers' Robot Sets New 4x4 Rubik's Cube Solving Record, 45.3 Seconds Certified by Guinness
Matthew and Thomas Pidden, two UK brothers, have developed a robot that recently set a new record for solving a 4x4 Rubik's Cube in 45.3 seconds, certified by Guinness World Records and breaking a decade-old record.
Matthew handled the software and control systems, writing algorithms to identify the cube's state and calculate solving steps. Thomas designed the mechanical structure, using 3D printing for key components. The robot uses four robotic arms to precisely rotate the cube's layers, scanning its state before executing fast solving actions.
Originally a course project at the University of Bristol, the project evolved into a record-breaking system after continuous optimization. The achievement demonstrates the potential of robotics in handling complex tasks and the power of combining creativity and persistence.
