UK officer investigated for using AI to fake evidence
A police officer in Derbyshire, UK, is under criminal investigation for using generative AI to create evidence in multiple cases, suspected of perverting the course of justice. The officer has been suspended while police and the Crown Prosecution Service investigate—the first case of its kind in the UK.
Just days earlier, the UK's new National Police AI Center had issued guidance advising officers not to use generative AI for drafting court statements, to prevent false content from entering legal materials. Center head Alex Murray said they need to slow down AI adoption to ensure proper checks and balances.
Law enforcement agencies worldwide have been adopting AI to speed up case resolution, but incidents like mistaken facial recognition arrests show speed doesn't equal accuracy. This case highlights risks of AI misuse in justice, raising concerns about technology abuse and fairness.
