UN Chief Calls for Global Coordination on AI Rules
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is calling on countries to work together on AI rules and step up oversight of the technology. He said the world cannot afford a race to the bottom on AI safety, and that AI governance needs real international cooperation and coordinated global action.
Guterres noted that AI's impact crosses borders, and so do its risks, so stronger safety measures must be put in place to prepare for potential dangers. He said he will talk about safety boundaries for AI in his speech at the UN General Assembly.
Earlier this year, Guterres launched an independent international scientific panel on AI. At the first global dialogue on AI governance held in Geneva, Switzerland, he called for broad and comprehensive global controls on AI, saying humanity may be the last generation able to set the terms for how humans and machines coexist.
