UNAM's AI Proctoring System Leads to Exam Irregularities, 58,000 Students Retake Test
The National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) used a remote exam and AI proctoring system for the first time in late May to early June 2026, but it didn't work well, forcing about 58,000 students to retake the test. UNAM is Mexico's largest university with over 300,000 students. The exam required students to install LockDown Browser, which locks the computer and monitors behavior, while AI analyzed if students used forbidden items or showed suspicious actions. After the new system, the percentage of high scorers jumped from 3.5% (2021-2025) to 16.3% in 2026, raising concerns. A committee investigated and decided to hold a controlled exam to ensure fairness.
