US Authors Sue OpenAI Over Copyright Infringement
Several US authors have filed a motion for summary judgment in a New York federal court, asking the judge to rule that OpenAI copied their works without permission and that this does not count as fair use. The case stems from a class action lawsuit filed by the Authors Guild against OpenAI and Microsoft in 2023, involving 194 books, including works by George R.R. Martin, author of "A Song of Ice and Fire." The plaintiffs allege OpenAI used pirated databases like LibGen to train its AI and tried to hide the source of the data. OpenAI has filed a cross-motion, saying its use of books for training is fair use. Microsoft is also involved because it has invested about $13 billion in OpenAI, and the authors say it should share responsibility. The court hasn't ruled yet, but the outcome could have a big impact on copyright rules for AI training data.
