US invests $5 billion to solve big science problems with AI
The US government announced a $5 billion plan to use AI to solve long-standing problems in science. The money will help find causes of chronic diseases, speed up drug development, and create stronger building materials.
Fifteen federal agencies are involved. Researchers can use the Energy Department's supercomputers and AI tools. White House tech advisor Michael Kratsios said the goal is to combine different research efforts into one big AI science project.
The Trump administration is also changing how research money is given out. More funds will go directly to individual scientists and AI projects instead of through universities. Microsoft will donate $40 million in AI computing power to support the plan.
