US lifts export restrictions on two Anthropic AI models
The US Commerce Department has lifted export restrictions on Anthropic's Fable and Mythos AI models, allowing them to be reopened. Earlier, the US government cited 'national security risks' and ordered Anthropic to halt exports and limit access to these models.
Anthropic announced on X that it would restore model access starting Wednesday local time. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said Anthropic has agreed to proactively identify security risks and work with the government on release protocols and safety standards for future models.
The move has sparked criticism. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said that while comprehensive safety testing is not a bad idea, having the government pick customers is unreasonable. Previously, OpenAI also delayed the full public release of GPT-5.6 at the US government's request.
