US Pentagon Deploying Multiple Large Models to Replace Anthropic's System
US Pentagon's Chief Digital and AI Officer Cameron Stanley confirmed that the Department of Defense is actively introducing multiple large language models into government-owned environments to replace the previously relied-upon Anthropic system. Engineering work has started and is expected to be operational soon.
Previously, Anthropic was labeled a 'supply chain risk' (usually only applied to foreign adversaries) by the Pentagon due to its inclusion of clauses prohibiting mass surveillance and autonomous weapons in contracts. Anthropic filed a lawsuit on March 9 regarding this.
Currently, the Pentagon has signed agreements with OpenAI and Musk's xAI. xAI's Grok model is allowed to be deployed in classified systems. The transition period will exceed one month as Anthropic's products are still used in US military operations related to Iran.
