US Senator Warren Warns: AI Industry May Repeat 2008 Financial Crisis, Calls for Congressional Regulation
US Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren recently stated at the Vanderbilt Policy Accelerator event in Washington that the AI industry has striking similarities to the 2008 financial crisis. She noted that while AI has great potential, AI companies are burning money and taking on leveraged debt, pushing the industry to the brink of danger.
Currently, the AI industry's growth rate can't keep up with its spending, so companies are turning to unregulated channels like private credit for financing. If they can't increase revenue quickly, huge debts may trigger market panic and even drag down the financial market. More dangerously, AI companies' financing has tied up funds from local banks, insurance funds, and other parties—if something goes wrong, it will cause a chain reaction.
Warren called on Congress to intervene quickly, suggesting the establishment of a new digital regulator responsible for antitrust and privacy protection. She also emphasized that the AI industry should not be bailed out if it fails, and accountability mechanisms need to be strengthened.
