Wall Street Predicts: Tesla and SpaceX May Merge in 2027, AI Computing Demand as Key Driver
Wall Street analyst Dan Ives recently predicted that Tesla and SpaceX may merge by 2027. This judgment is not unfounded—Tesla's $2 billion investment in xAI was converted into SpaceX equity after SpaceX acquired xAI, establishing a direct capital link between the two companies.
The two sides also announced the joint construction of the TERAFAB facility in Austin, Texas, which includes two advanced chip factories: one to meet the AI computing needs of Tesla cars and Optimus robots, and the other for space data centers. Additionally, SpaceX plans to launch its IPO in June 2026, raising about $75 billion with a valuation of $1.75 trillion. Funds will be used for Starship launches, Starlink expansion, and orbital AI infrastructure.
Rapid growth in AI computing demand is a key driver. The market expects U.S. data center electricity consumption to reach 470 TWh by 2030, with ground resources becoming a bottleneck. Space data centers can bypass this limitation. However, the merger faces obstacles like antitrust reviews, and the result depends on regulatory attitudes and shareholder approval.
