WeChat AI agent launch depends on regulatory approval

According to Tencent insiders, the launch date of WeChat's AI agent is uncertain and largely depends on regulatory approval. Given WeChat's 1.4 billion users, the compliance process may be stricter than for other products. Tencent officials have no comment yet.

Earlier reports said WeChat plans to launch an AI agent, with the compliance approval process starting as soon as this month. The project is described as a top-priority secret project within Tencent, in preparation since at least early 2025.

Tencent's 2026 AI Industry Application Conference will be held in Beijing, where new agent applications and infrastructure upgrades will be announced. Senior Executive Vice President Tang Daosheng and Chief AI Scientist Yao Shunyu will discuss Tencent's latest AI strategy.
