WikiHow sues OpenAI over using its articles to train AI
WikiHow, a popular how-to website, filed a lawsuit in a US federal court on August 21. It says OpenAI used over 11,000 of its articles without permission to train AI models like ChatGPT, violating at least 1,200 copyrights.
WikiHow claims OpenAI copied its content on many topics, from everyday tasks to professional skills. Now, ChatGPT can recreate WikiHow articles or make similar tutorials with much less time and effort. This hurts WikiHow's income and its reason to keep creating new guides.
WikiHow is asking for money damages and a court order to stop OpenAI from using its content. OpenAI says it trains models on public data and follows fair use rules. WikiHow hasn't commented further.
