Woman in Shanghai detained for creating fake subway video with AI

On June 12, a small piece of wall plaster fell from the ceiling of a transfer passageway at Jiangpu Road Station on Shanghai Metro Line 18, causing no injuries. Repairs were made. The next day, a 50-year-old woman named Sun from another province, seeking online attention, used AI to create a fake video showing a large ceiling collapse at the station and posted it on her WeChat channel, causing serious social harm.

Police, with help from local authorities, arrested Sun and gave her administrative detention. They warned that AI-generated fake content is a new trend in spreading rumors, being highly realistic and fast-spreading, which can easily cause public panic. They urged people to stay alert and not to spread false information.
