Writer Dave Eggers criticizes ChatGPT's impact on education in OpenAI speech
Last year, American writer Dave Eggers was invited by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman to speak to about 200 employees. Eggers, known for his novel 'The Circle' which satirizes the tech industry, has previously criticized AI-generated text as 'meaningless imitation.'
According to the Financial Times, Eggers openly criticized OpenAI during his speech. He said ChatGPT has had a 'disastrous' impact on educators, making their jobs 'infinitely harder' than two years ago. He warned that if students start using it for writing, they'll never learn to write properly and will lose their own voice.
Altman likely knew the speech wouldn't be friendly, as Eggers has criticized AI before. Eggers also founded McSweeney's magazine and several nonprofits supporting writers, putting him at odds with AI development.
