xAI's Grok Programming Tool Faces Internal Adoption Issues; Musk Plans to Acquire Cursor to Catch Up
xAI's programming tool Grok has recently faced internal adoption challenges. Despite xAI promoting Grok to enterprises for months to speed up programming processes, SpaceX engineers and xAI employees prefer alternatives like Claude, as Grok's actual performance is not as good as competitors' tools.
To catch up with rivals, Musk's SpaceX announced an agreement: it can either acquire AI programming startup Cursor for $600 billion later this year or pay $10 billion for collaborative projects, aiming to build the world's best AI for programming and knowledge work. Additionally, xAI is trying to sell Grok to Wall Street giants and U.S. government agencies, but external parties doubt its programming and financial modeling capabilities, leading to slow progress.
Musk admitted xAI is behind in programming and is restructuring the team by hiring extensively (including poaching senior employees from Cursor) and bringing in a Starlink executive as xAI's president. However, internal employees are confused about the rhythm of layoffs and hiring, as well as frequent changes in project directions.
