73% of Americans Worry AI Companies Aren't Doing Enough on Safety, Reuters Poll Finds
A new Reuters/Ipsos poll shows about 73% of Americans worry that AI companies are not doing enough to prevent serious harm to society. The four-day survey ended last Sunday.
39% of respondents say AI is having a negative impact on society, up from 36% last month and the highest since March. Only 11% see the new technology as positive. Most say federal officials should play a major role in setting AI safety standards.
About 69% of Americans have followed news of big AI companies calling for slower development and stronger safety rules. 55% think slowing AI development is a good thing, while 13% say it is bad. 73% say making sure AI is developed safely and responsibly is more important for the US.
Despite calls from well-known figures for federal action, little has happened so far. The Republican-led House is in recess until November, making quick action unlikely soon.
