Alibaba's Qwen App Upgrades Teen Protection Mode, Limits Intimate AI Roleplay and Adds Usage Time Reminders
Alibaba announced that its Qwen app has upgraded its minor protection mode. Parents can turn on this mode in settings and set a separate password. Once enabled, the app only keeps four learning features: photo Q&A, AI writing, translation, and deep research. Chat history is fully separated from normal mode, and third-party links are restricted.
The mode strengthens control over inappropriate content such as vulgar or violent material, and responds to questions in ways suited to minors' understanding. For simulated intimate relationships like virtual partners or virtual relatives, Qwen will gently decline and offer positive guidance to prevent unhealthy emotional dependence.
When extreme emotional tendencies are detected, Qwen prioritizes providing professional psychological hotline information. If a user stays on for over 30 minutes continuously, they will receive a rest reminder to protect their well-being.
