Amazon Blocks Meta's AI Agent Muse from Shopping on Its Site
Amazon has blocked Meta's personal AI agent Muse from shopping on its website on behalf of users. When users try to place orders through Muse on Amazon, a notice pops up saying unauthorized AI agents violate Amazon's terms of service. Amazon says Meta did not tell it in advance that Muse would access its platform, the agent does not identify itself while browsing, and it appears to collect and store user account credentials, raising privacy and security concerns.
Meta responded that Muse cannot read user passwords or payment information. Credentials go into secure storage, and the agent can use them but cannot see the plain text. Meta officially launched Muse on September 8. It can perform multi-step tasks and connect to email, calendars, payments, and shopping services. Within a week of launch, it topped the free app chart on the U.S. Apple App Store.
The clash draws attention because the two companies also work together. Since 2023, users have been able to buy Amazon products inside Facebook and Instagram. In April, Meta signed a multi-billion-dollar deal to run its AI workloads on Amazon's cloud platform. Over the past year, Amazon has blocked shopping agents from Google and OpenAI, and sued over Perplexity's Comet browser. The dispute reflects a broader industry question: when AI agents shop for consumers, who controls the online shopping experience and the customer relationship.
