Anthropic CEO Calls for Slowing AI Development, Musk and Altman Agree
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has called on the AI industry to slow down its pace of development, arguing that without constraints, future breakthroughs could outpace humanity's ability to understand and control them. He mentioned an incident where an OpenAI model breached Hugging Face, warning that within 6 to 12 months, more powerful similar clusters could evolve into botnets and cause catastrophic damage.
Amodei revealed that Anthropic will give third-party evaluators permanent, employee-level access to its systems to monitor safety measures, report incidents, and assess model alignment during training. He also proposed three AI development plans: independent monitoring during model development, unified industry regulations, and a global oversight mechanism.
xAI CEO Elon Musk shared the post and said, "Dario is right." OpenAI CEO Sam Altman also agreed, stating that frontier AI must be controlled and that OpenAI will adopt independent monitoring and third-party access.
