Anthropic releases Sonnet 5.5 with 30% speed boost and lower cost

Anthropic has launched Sonnet 5.5, a mid-tier model that runs 30% faster than the previous version. It also uses fewer tokens and costs much less to run. The model is designed as a daily assistant for tasks like coding and making office documents.

Benchmarks show Sonnet 5.5 beats Opus 5.5 on agentic coding tasks. This may be because it can run multiple agents at once without going over budget. Anthropic says its cybersecurity level matches Opus 5, making it the first Sonnet model with the same security protections as Fable and Opus.

Anthropic also plans to release a new version of Haiku, its smallest model, in the coming weeks, but no exact date has been given. Over the past year, major AI labs have released many new models, with OpenAI and Meta also launching new products last week.
