Apple requires 18+ ratings for dating and AI companion apps on the App Store

Apple has announced new age rating rules for the App Store. Apps with location sharing, dating, or real and virtual romance features must be rated 18+.

Starting November 16, developers filling out the rating questionnaire in App Store Connect must declare if their apps include location sharing, dating, or AI companion features. Location sharing means sharing real-world locations with others, and virtual companions are services for sexual or romantic interactions.

Apps with real or AI dating features will get an 18+ rating at minimum. For location-only apps, ratings vary by region. In Brazil, for example, location apps need an A16 rating, while dating apps need an A18. Apps that qualify for a lower rating can apply for adjustment with local authorities.

Developers must complete the declaration when submitting app updates or changing ratings. All apps must finish this by January 12, 2027.
