Goldman Sachs limits AI coding tools to engineers only
Goldman Sachs has banned most of its staff from using AI coding tools after weighing efficiency and risks. Anthropic's Claude Code and Microsoft's GitHub, once open to banking staff, are now reserved for engineers only. The move has upset some employees. Earlier, the bank had also barred its Hong Kong staff from using Claude.
Traders are among those affected. They used these tools to monitor client transactions, build models for market swings and positions, and create charts and reports. Back in July, Goldman's CIO had praised non-technical staff using AI for casual coding.
Wall Street banks are spending millions on AI tools while balancing security risks and costs. Goldman has built its own AI assistant using models from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Alphabet, and served as lead underwriter for Anthropic's IPO. Quant strategy staff are exempt from the new rule.
