New York Times Sues Brave Over AI Content Scraping
On Monday, The New York Times sued browser maker Brave in a federal court in Manhattan. The paper says Brave used a hidden web crawler to copy copyrighted news articles and sell them to AI companies like Anthropic, Perplexity, and Mistral. Other newspapers filed a similar lawsuit the same day. The lawsuit claims Brave built an index of more than 30 billion web pages that publishers could not block. It also targets a Brave feature that can bypass paywalls, and the way Brave blocks publisher ads and shows its own ads instead. Brave was founded in 2015 and has raised about 250 million US dollars so far. The New York Times wants the court to stop these actions and award damages. It had already sued OpenAI and Perplexity over similar issues before.
